Project Runway recap: Revenge of the Bump

8.28.2009 0 comments

Who knew that adding a large bump to the front of your mannequins could create such a drastic difference? Our designers didn't. This week's challenge, creating a 'form-fitting' outfit for any occasion for a very pregnant Rebecca Romijn left some designers clueless, while other flourished. Some just sent a chicken down the runway. Conceptually, of course.
Oh My Challenging Rami's Famous Draping + Coat, by Shirin: This deserved the win. The color is rich, and the lattice draping is fantastic. We haven't seen fantastic draping like that since Rami in season four. I adore the lining in the coat. I love the line of the back, as well. Oh Hey There Boobs, by Althea: Heidi and the girls were right on the mark when they said the problem with this dress was the bust. Had this dress been more covered in the chest region, she probably would have won. The back detail is gorgeous, and the length and color is flattering and very pretty. She took a risk making the dress long. Most of the designers made a cocktail dress-length garment for fear their model looking as if she's wearing a tent, but the length worked here. Oh Please This is Cearly Lingerie, by Louise: The lace, I think, makes this too lingerie-y. The line on the top is almost too high. I do, however, like the teirs and the flower detail on the right shoulder. This was a good third placer.
Oh Let's Go Bowling, by Ra'mon: I think he took a risk. It looks good from the front, as the judged said, but from the side it looks like a bowling ball bag, a phrase Rebecca Romijn loved to repeat. He's lucky there were worst entries, becase the pattern was bad here. On a regular woman, it would be fine, probably, but it faied as a maternity dress. Oh I See a Lion, by Mitchell: If the shorts had come out even close to what he wanted them to be, this would have been a good outfit. But they came out looking like plus-size (or plus-SEXY, as Qrystal would say) lingerie shorts. I really like the safari aethestic, and think this is wearable, but the shorts are way to dangerously in fug territory for this to make it. Watch out Mitchell- this is your second week in the shark tank, and I'm not sure you can survive much longer. The model looks adorable, to her credit. She worked this. Oh Cock-a-Doodle-Doo, by Marvin: Do I have to say anything about this? She looks like the baby has already been born and it's lying in the sling of a shirt she has there. Bye, bye, Marvin. A delightfully right-on auf. Also, she doesn't look like a chicken. So, technically, you kind of failed on concept, too.

Models of the Runway looks kind of amazing.

7.31.2009 2 comments

Models of the Runway is the new spinoff from Project Runway, essentially a behind-the-scenes look at the model drama that is usually excluded from the PR edit. A new trailer for the show, however, shows it is going to be much, much better than you might think. It's like America's Next Top Model, except with no Tyra Banks and with more focus on the clothes.

The New Project Runway

Or is it? Image courtesy of Entertainment Weekly
I'm going to be honest: this August 20th will be the first time I have ever watched the Lifetime channel on television. Yes, I have resisted turning on the made-for-tv movies starring Rob Pattinson's latest fling and whatever else the femme-friendly channel airs. But that is all about to change, as the premiere of the updated Project Runway, switching homes from Bravo to Lifetime, airs.
Heidi Klum, the gorgeous supermodel host of Runway, told Entertainment Weekly that she imagined that the new sunny location of the reality series (Los Angeles, in fact) would be only the first of many changes to the show. However, "I was shocked," she said. "It was déjà vu. I was looking forward to different scenery, but everything was the same!" Runway has basically disappeared off air for more than a year, due to the legal battle over the show's status between the Weinstein Company (which owns a majority of the show), NBC Universal (parent company to Bravo), and Lifetime, which bought the rights to air Runway seasons six through ten. In fact, the shooting of season six was more or less complete by the time the legal dispute came to an end, and resulted in a blowout of advertising for the less-than-popular channel of both Runway and its new spinoff (no, not the god-awful The Fashion Show). This year, Runway will be airing alongside Models of the Runway, a behind-the-scenes look at PR's typically ignored yet all-important models.
So what's new for Project Runway? First, its new Los Angeles location will add some sunny glam to the show's energy, perhaps refreshing its typical Manhattan vibe. The show will also feature more celebrity judges, including Lindsey Lohan and Eva Longoria Parker. The sponsors have switched up: no more TREsemme, bluefly.com, or Elle magazine! Instead, Garnier takes over hair, Macy's donates the accessories, and fabulous judge Nina Garcia's new magazine employer, Marie Claire, will feature the winning designer/model team. In addition, the winning prize will be 100,000 dollars to start their own line and an all-expenses paid trip to the fashion capital of the world, Paris.
But don't worry: there's a Mood Fabrics in Los Angeles, too.

Project Runway's Kenley a Literal Crazy Cat Lady

3.19.2009 0 comments

So, if anyone can remember Kenley Collins from the last season of Project Runway (can anyone even remember that far back?), she was the annoying 50's girl with the nasaly voice. Then she lost and disappeared from the face of the Earth. But this morning, Kenley jumped back into the news. Why? She was arrested for assault on her ex-fiance Zak Penley and later was released without bail. She claims it was a misunderstanding, but from the police reports, we know what went down. The Post writes:
According to sources, the fur began to fly at 7 a.m., when Collins cocked her arm and threw one of the couple's two cats, Arlo or Sandra, at Penley, who was sleeping at the time. She then threw her laptop as he fell and crawled on the floor, cops said. She also allegedly slammed a door on his head. As Penley dialed 911, Collins threw three apples at him and doused him with water, cops said.
The funniest part is the cats. They don't know which cat it was? And who throws cats at people. I mean, just visually imagining it is hilarious. Also, if she had married him, her name would be Kenley Penley. Where do these people meet?
